Why study Advising Pre-Dentistry?
Pre-Dental is a non-degree program that combines a course of study with co-curricular experiences to prepare a student for the Dental Admission Test (DAT) and application process for dental education programs. As a non-degree program, a student either has already completed a degree program or is pursuing a degree program while completing this coursework. The pre-requisite dental curriculum may be combined with any major at the university; though, some majors have similar course requirements which make the journey more streamlined. Students are encouraged to begin meeting with a Pre-Professional Advisor early in their academic career to take advantage of all the opportunities the University of Cincinnati provides.Major Maps
Pre-Dental students should work closely with their Pre-Professional Advisor to make sure they are on track for both the pre-requisite courses and the co-curricular experiences required for applying to dental schools. UC students can use a degree audit feature within Catalyst, called a "What-If" report, to track their pre-dental courses and GPA.
Advising
Specialized advising for those interested in a dentistry career is available through the University's Pre-Professional Advising Center (PPAC). Dental schools look for academically strong students who have explored the field of dentistry in their undergraduate career and who also have strong co-curricular experiences. Students are encouraged to meet with their PPAC advisor early in their career and freshman year is the perfect starting point. PPAC advisors will support students through the entire process for admission into a dental school, from preparation through application. Additionally, the PPAC works collaboratively with a student's college advisor to ensure the student is getting as much support as possible.
Special Programs
- To help develop leadership, teamwork and inter-professional skills, students are recommended to participate in programming through one of the over 400 student organizations at the University of Cincinnati. Pre-Professional Advising recommends students choose two of the many organizations: one professional and one just for fun. Pre-Dental Students should consider joining: T.O.O.T.H. The Oral Organization Toward Health: The purpose of T.O.O.T.H is to raise awareness of the importance of oral health and to prepare students for future endeavors in the dental field through speakers, volunteering, and social events. Please check with the PPAC website or the Student Activities and Leadership Development Office (SALD) for contact information on any of the UC student organizations.
- Exploring Health Professions (PD1000) is an an undergraduate course that provides students with a wider and deeper understanding of a variety of health professions. The course content focuses on professional development, ethical behaviors, cross-cultural understanding, and preparing a competitive application to health professions programs. Students earn HIPAA certification and undertake bloodborne pathogen training during the course. After successful completion of the course, students are prepared to responsibly engage in shadowing, volunteering, interning, or paid work in a healthcare setting including the Pre-Health Internship program (PHIP).
