Undergraduate Majors

With more than 40 majors to choose from, our curriculum offers you unparalleled opportunity to pick your path and find the right fit for you, whether you’re interested in Natural Sciences and Mathematics or Social Sciences, or Humanities like History and English are more your style.

Many of our majors also offer opportunities for internships and co-ops both locally and nationally, study abroad and service learning, where you make real-world impact on your community.

If you’re not sure which major is right for you, you’re not alone. Many incoming students aren’t sure with path is the right one—which may be why many of our first-year students choose our Exploratory Studies Program. Through Exploratory Studies, you’ll learn more about what each major has to offer, and whether it’s right for you.

Why study Nutrition Sciences?

The goal of the Nutrition Minor is to provide students in a variety of majors at the University of Cincinnati with a strong foundation of the basic principles of food and nutrition. To fulfill this goal, the minor will prepare students to be able to:

  • explain basic principles of human nutrition;
  • make sound decisions about food to enhance overall health;
  • recognize the importance of exercise and fitness as it relates to health and wellness; and
  • demonstrate familiarity with nutritional issues of various life stages.

The nutrition minor program is designed for students interested in health care or those enrolled in a variety of different undergraduate majors that have fulfilled the prerequisites needed to complete the minor curriculum. Students may find the nutrition minor beneficial for broadening future employment opportunities and for improving their personal nutrition, health, and lifestyle outcomes.

The nutrition minor requires completion of only 18 semester credit hours of coursework. The curriculum also offers flexibility to select electives based on your area of interest. Some courses are offered online and three courses count as UC’s general education requirements:

  • NUTR 1030: Personal Nutrition (NS)
  • NUTR 1040: Food and Culture (SCE)
  • NUTR 1050C: Eating for Sports Performance (NS)

Career Possibilities

The Nutrition Minor is designed to benefit those preparing to work in medical and health-related professions. Future physicians, nurses, dental professionals, psychologists, researchers, occupational and physical therapists and others will find that the nutrition minor will enable them to become more effective practitioners. In addition, those who work in corporate wellness, personal training, wellness centers, and fitness facilities will enter the job market with a more well-rounded educational profile that enhances the information and service they provide to their clients.

It is important to note that those obtaining the nutrition minor will not be able to provide one-on-one counseling in nutrition. To provide one-on-one counseling in nutrition, you will need the Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN) credential.  For additional information visit the Pathways to the RDN webpage.
