Why study Advanced Medical Imaging Technology?
The University of Cincinnati Advanced Medical Imaging Technology major is a unique, innovative program that offers you the opportunity to become credentialed in two diagnostic medical imaging modalities, while obtaining a bachelor’s degree.
Traditionally, programs specialize in a single diagnostic medical imaging modality and most programs are housed within a certificate or associate degree programs that are 12-24 months in length. The Advanced Medical Imaging Technology program curriculum ensures you are educated in multiple diagnostic medical imaging modalities giving you credentials in both magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and nuclear medicine technology.
Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI)
Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is a technique that uses strong magnetic fields and radio waves to generate detailed images of the body.
Nuclear Medicine Technology
Nuclear medicine technology is a type of imaging that uses small amounts of radioactive substances to help creates a precise picture of the part of the body being imaged. Both imaging techniques help diagnosis and detect disease and analyze human anatomy.
Board Examination Eligibility
After completing the program, you will meet national board eligibility requirements in both MRI and nuclear medicine technology and be able to take the licensing examinations. UC student pass rate of nationally administered board examinations dramatically exceeds national averages for all modalities.
The clinical or professional portion of the curriculum will allow you to have individualized placements at some of the best medical and imaging facilities in the region. You will also gain research skills that will distinguish you from other credentialed students from associate or certificate programs.
Graduates are in a better position to advance within the profession, accepting positions of greater responsibility, and are prepared for continuing their education with a graduate or professional degree.

State Authorization
Federal regulations require the University of Cincinnati to publicly disclose whether completion of certain programs that lead or may lead to professional licensure or certification would meet a given state’s educational requirements for a specific professional license or certification required for employment in an occupation (regardless of whether the program is on-ground, online, or hybrid). Career Possibilities
Advanced Medical Imaging Technology program graduates generally employed as magnetic resonance imaging technologist and nuclear medicine technologist and are employed in hospitals, medical centers, outpatient clinics, and research facilities. Advancement in this field may involve promotion to supervisory and administrative positions, equipment and pharmaceutical sales, product support, and teaching.
Your Bachelor of Science in Advanced Medical Imaging Technology may also be used as a point of entry to graduate or medical school, should students seek to further their education.

Admission Requirements
The University of Cincinnati has established academic success criteria for first-year applicants to bachelor's degree programs. All students are encouraged to apply. Please visit High School Student Admissions for more information about first-year student admission requirements.
Clinical Admissions
The Advanced Medical Imaging Technology program has a secondary admissions process into the clinical or professional part of its curriculum. Upon successful completion of all freshman and sophomore year requirements, you may apply to the professional part of the program (junior and senior years). This is a competitive process and not all students will be accepted into the professional curriculum.
You must apply for the professional education curriculum during fall semester of the year prior to your anticipated start date. Review the secondary admission application for additional information.
Transferring to UC Requirements
Students who have earned a high school diploma or GED and have attended a college or university other than the University of Cincinnati since earning their high school credentials are considered transfer students. Changing Majors within UC Requirements
If you are currently enrolled in an undergraduate program at the University of Cincinnati (including UC Blue Ash and UC Clermont), but want to change your major to one in the College of Allied Health Sciences, please visit Transition Admissions for more information.

The Joint Review Committee on Education Radiologic Technology (JRCERT) monitors performance measures of programs and makes this information available to the public. Successful completion of a JRCERT-accredited program assures you that you will be provided with the knowledge, skills, and professional values required for career success.
Nuclear Medicine Accreditation
The Nuclear Medicine Technology Program is accredited in accordance with the standards as set forth by the Joint Review Committee on Educational Programs in Nuclear Medicine Technology (JRCNMT), 820 W. Danforth Road, #B1, Edmond, Oklahoma 73003. Program graduates will be eligible to apply for an examination administered either by the Nuclear Medicine Technology Certification Board (NMTCB) or the American Registry of Radiologic Technology (ARRT) and subsequently may be licensed by various state agencies.
The Advanced Medical Imaging Technology Nuclear Medicine Technology program is currently accredited by the JRCNMT. The most recent program accreditation renewal was in 2019, the program was awarded a 7 year accreditation award and is due for review again in 2026.
