Undergraduate Majors

With more than 40 majors to choose from, our curriculum offers you unparalleled opportunity to pick your path and find the right fit for you, whether you’re interested in Natural Sciences and Mathematics or Social Sciences, or Humanities like History and English are more your style.

Many of our majors also offer opportunities for internships and co-ops both locally and nationally, study abroad and service learning, where you make real-world impact on your community.

If you’re not sure which major is right for you, you’re not alone. Many incoming students aren’t sure with path is the right one—which may be why many of our first-year students choose our Exploratory Studies Program. Through Exploratory Studies, you’ll learn more about what each major has to offer, and whether it’s right for you.

Why study Electronic Media Technology?

Electronic media technology prepares students in a broad array of media communication and production skills.  Instruction includes critical studies in media, portfolio development, and research. Production courses are structured to provide hands-on, practical experience with both technology and process in smaller-sized classes.  There are opportunities for students to work on media projects for real clients under faculty supervision.  When offered, these real-world experiences complement course work.  Many of these experiences are provided in regular production courses, but there are also options for professional internships, individual and group studio projects, and professional capstone experiences.  Students are not required to have previous media production experience to enroll in our program. The professional certificate program is open to students with a baccalaureate degree in any discipline.

Our philosophy is based upon the belief that there must be balance between practice and theory that integrates design skills and concepts; technical skills; critical, historical and cultural education; and professional practice. Our curriculum seeks to balance studio work with critical, cultural and historical studies.

Students prepare for career positions in a wide range of media-based communications industries including audio and video production, corporate communications, digital imaging, multimedia and Web production, presentation support, broadcast and cable television, online content development and educational media development.

The professional certificate may be combined with any of our One-Year Certificate programs for focused training in a specific technical skill or content area and an enhanced set of professional credentials upon completion of the program.  Students interested in this option must consult with academic and financial aid advisors to determine a plan for dual completion.

Students who succeed in the electronic media technology program are creative thinkers who have an interest in production and digital technologies. They approach assignments and productions in a creative manner to satisfy an instructor’s or client’s vision. They apply their creative energy and academic knowledge to develop solutions. They are team players who are willing to work hard and are able to meet deadlines.

Career Possibilities

Minoring in Electronic Media Technology

The professional certificate program in Electronic Media Technology is for students holding a baccalaureate degree. As a two-year career-oriented program, does not include an option for a minor.  Minors for baccalaureate degrees are available through our department in the following areas: animation, interactive web multimedia, and media criticism and journalism. Each minor requires 30 credit hours. These minors are designed for students interested in focused training in discipline specific technologies and processes for working in a wide range of industries. Students should seek the approval of their academic advisors for approval before enrolling in a minor program.  See electronic media communications one-year certificate programs for curriculum outlines for these minors.

Special Programs

Performance Package Certificate Programs

Electronic Media Communications offers a number of performance package certificate programs to help students upgrade skills and knowledge to become more marketable professionals and more valuable employees. Each performance package certificate consists of three courses that build production or critical skills in a particular discipline. Students can typically complete one of these Performance Packages in a single year. Electronic Media Technology program students can complete one or more of the Performance Package programs as they complete the required courses for the associate of applied science degree, professional certificate, or one-year certificate program.

Students successfully completing all of the courses in a performance package, earning a grade of C or better in each course, receive a certificate of achievement. Students will receive the certificate upon approval of the application form, and may complete any number of the certificate packages.
