Why study Pre-Engineering?

Engineering is the design, construction and operation of structures, machines and systems using established scientific principles. Engineers put scientific knowledge to practical use, serving a critical role in today's increasingly complex world.

The Pre-Engineering program provides the appropriately prepared student with the first year toward completion of a bachelor’s degree in engineering.* Students transitioning to the College of Engineering and Applied Science (CEAS) at the University of Cincinnati will have four to five more years of study. Engineering programs in CEAS require five years of study; it may take longer depending on your pathway and preparation.

Please note students may need to take additional courses depending on their Math and English placement test score which may require completion of the required Pre-Engineering curriculum to extend beyond two semesters.  Students working to meet the required math level for this advising track should enroll at UC Blue Ash College in the Exploratory Studies program.

*The student will need to meet regularly with an advisor to ensure the General Education requirements align with the chosen engineering discipline.  Additional courses may include ENED1020, ENED1090, ENED1091, PD1011 and Intro to Discipline course (major specific) at UC's College of Engineering and Applied Science.

Conveniently located in Blue Ash as a regional campus of the University of Cincinnati - UC Blue Ash (UCBA) - is located on 135 wooded acres and serves residents of Hamilton, Butler, Warren and Clermont counties, as well as other surrounding communities. UCBA also works closely with the Blue Ash area workforce to assist with their training needs.

The UCBA campus is friendly, informal, and prides itself on being accessible to students of all ages with various career aspirations. The UC Blue Ash academic labs are one of our best student resources. They are free and open to any UCBA student. If you are returning to college after a long absence or feel under-prepared for the challenges of college, the academic labs may provide just what you need.

Admission Requirements

This program is open to all students with a high school diploma or GED and the desire to succeed in college. Although admission is open, students accepted into the program must meet the academic standards of the program to advance to upper levels of study.

As a first-year student, you will need to take an English and mathematics placement test if you have not obtained the minimum ACT/SAT score required for exemption. These tests do not affect your admission; however, the results are essential for your proper placement in classes. You must complete placement tests before you register for English or mathematics courses. All placement tests are given free of charge.

Transferring to UC Requirements

To transfer to UC Blue Ash, you must be in good academic standing at the college or university you last attended. We accept transfer applications all year long.

If you have not taken college-level English or mathematics, you will need to take the placement test.

Changing Majors within UC Requirements

Other UC students may transfer into UC Blue Ash by completing the application for change in college and program form available from UC admission offices. You are strongly urged to see your advisor before transferring into a different major to minimize any impact or your degree progress.

International Student Requirements

A TOEFL score of 187 (computer test) or 515 (paper exam) is required if your formal education is from a country where English is not a primary language or if your documents do not clearly indicate your proficiency in English. You must alsom meet admission deadlines and visa requirements, and provide documentation of sufficient funds before we can complete your admission. Please contact Enrollment Services for details.

Note you will be charged nonresident tuition.

Note that UCBA is a non-residential campus (no dorms or other housing is available). It is possible to live in a dorm on the UC Clifton campus as bus transportation is availble to and from the Clifton and  UCBA campuses.

Graduation Requirements

This is an advising track to prepare for application to an engineering program and is not a degree or certificate granting program.
