Why study Entrepreneurship/Family Business?

Given that 90 percent of all firms are considered small or medium enterprises and that small businesses produce the majority of new jobs, the entrepreneurship minor at UC's Carl H. Lindner College of Business (Lindner) provides excellent preparation for the world of business. Emphasis is placed on practical issues and interactions related to individual, social and corporate entrepreneurship. Students who add the entrepreneurship minor to another degree program may be interested in starting their own ventures. Many with this background are also well prepared to work for businesses and organizations that interact with small, entrepreneurial and family ventures on a regular basis.

Career Possibilities

While the aspiring entrepreneur will find this program quite appealing, it will also prepare students to work for larger businesses and support organizations that interact with small, entrepreneurial and family owned ventures. Coupling the entrepreneurship minor with another major enhances the student’s entrepreneurial or organizational career options. For instance, adding this minor to an information systems major could lead to work as an independent consultant or work for a larger firm servicing small, entrepreneurial and family owned ventures. Combining this minor with an accounting major could lead to opening an independent tax consulting business or a career with a larger accounting firm in its small and medium sized business division.

In Lindner, students are encouraged to get involved in the things they care about via the 20-plus student organizations within the Lindner College of Business, the 300-plus organizations within the University of Cincinnati and ongoing partnerships with service organizations like the United Way of Greater Cincinnati.

Admission Requirements

Current Lindner students may add this minor to enhance their majors. Non-Lindner students already pursuing a baccalaureate degree in any college at the University of Cincinnati can add the minor to their program as long as they meet the following requirements:

• Have 30 earned semester credit hours
• Have at least a 3.0 University GPA and be enrolled in a four-year degree granting program
• Complete at least 50 percent of all minor coursework in the Lindner College of Business
• Earn a 2.0 in minor courses to be certified with the minor.

Students will be notified by email of their acceptance into the program and the process for registration in the Lindner classes required for the minor.

Graduation Requirements

Students who have been accepted to the minor will see the minor appear on their application for graduation. Students apply for graduation in the minor as they normally would for their bachelor’s degree.

Application Deadlines

Applications deadlines for the business minors follow the “application for change in college” dates.

Fall Semester – July 1
