Another Department
Faculty
This section should serve as a directory of all faculty members within the department. Each entry should include the faculty member's name and contact information. Can also highlight leadership.
Our Students
Highlight the student experience by showcasing sample student work, student organizations, academic achievements (such as honors and awards), and provide key resources like advising information and the student handbook. This section is also an opportunity to celebrate student success and create a sense of community by highlighting student awards and honors.
Research
Focus on the department’s research strengths and areas of importance. Include links to major research centers or labs within the department and feature significant publications. You can also highlight key ongoing research projects or areas where the department is leading in terms of research contributions.
Academic Offerings / Programs & Degrees
This section should present a list of all degree programs offered by the department. Each program should be linked to the official university program page where prospective students can get detailed information. Focus on clear navigation, and avoid creating multiple pages for a single program. Instead, consolidate information and link to the primary program page to maintain simplicity and consistency for users. The name of this section can also be flexible to match the specific offerings of the unit.
News & Events
This section should be regularly updated with the latest news and events from the department. Include highlights such as annual conferences or symposiums, recent student placements in jobs or internships, and any significant achievements from faculty or students. Archiving past newsletters can also help showcase the department's history and ongoing initiatives.
Wildcard
Departments may add up to 2 or 3 customized sections based on their unique offerings to keep navigation short and functional. Examples of wild card sections include Scholarships available to students, opportunities for experiential learning (internships, co-ops, study abroad), or publications (such as literary journals for English departments). Tailor these sections to the specific strengths and resources of the department while maintaining streamlined navigation.
Additional Guidance
- Avoid hiding pages in navigation: When users can't see what is available, it becomes harder for them to browse the site effectively. Additionally, hidden pages make it difficult for content owners to maintain and update content, as they may not have a full picture of what is live on the site. Clear and visible navigation ensures both a better user experience and easier content management.Replace with your text.
- Streamline titles: Use shorter, more concise titles in navigation menus to enhance usability, while keeping the full, formal titles on the actual page content. For example, use "Communication, Film, & Media Studies" in the menu and "School of Communication, Film and Media" as the page title. This keeps navigation clean and efficient while maintaining formal titles where necessary.
- Reduce redundancies: Avoid replicating content, such as admission deadlines or minimum qualifications, across multiple pages. This can confuse users about which information is accurate and makes it harder for content owners to keep everything up to date. Focus on linking to central, authoritative sources to ensure consistency.
